Kengo: Master of Bushido is a fighting game developed by Genki and released for the PlayStation 2 in 2000 in Japan and in 2001 in North America and Europe. Set in feudal Japan, the game follows the journey of a swordsman as they train to become the 'Master of Bushido' (The Way of the Warrior). Players can choose from three swordsmen, each with unique attributes, and select from eight different dojo, each specializing in a particular school of swordfighting. The gameplay involves a deep fighting engine with a focus on realistic depictions of kenjutsu. Players use four 'stances' selected via the shoulder buttons, and execute combos by pressing the Circle button. The game includes training mini-games to improve the character's stats, such as Attack Power, Attack Speed, Agility, Insight, and Spirit. The single-player mode features a campaign where players spar with other students, challenge other dojo, and participate in the Imperial Tournament. The game also includes a VS Mode for one-on-one battles. Kengo: Master of Bushido received mixed reviews from critics, with a Metacritic score of 62/100. Despite this, it was praised for its unique fighting style and deep replay value. For example, Chester 'Chet' Barber of NextGen noted its 'deep fighting engine and great replay value,' making it a must-buy for fans of Bushido Blade. The game remains a niche title with a dedicated following, particularly among those interested in historical and culturally accurate depictions of samurai combat. While it may not be as widely recognized as some other fighting games, Kengo: Master of Bushido holds historical significance as one of the early games to focus on realistic sword fighting and the culture of feudal Japan.
