Orphen: Scion of Sorcery, known in Japan as Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, is an action role-playing game released in 2000 for the PlayStation 2. Developed by SHADE Inc. and co-published by Kadokawa Shoten and ESP in Japan, with Activision handling the international release, the game is based on the light novel series of the same name by Yoshinobu Akita. The story follows Orphen and his friends who, after being tricked into sailing to the merchant city of Arvanrama, find themselves stranded on Chaos Island after their ship is attacked by monsters. Players must explore the island, solve puzzles, and engage in real-time battles using a combination of melee weapons, spells, and elemental shields. The gameplay involves platforming and puzzle-solving outside of battles, with a unique battle system that allows for real-time attacks and defensive maneuvers. However, the game received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its visual effects and cutscenes but criticism for its repetitive battles, poor translation, and linear gameplay. Despite this, it remains a notable title in the early PS2 library, though it lacks significant current popularity or demand beyond its historical significance as a launch title for the console.
