Call of Duty: WWII is a first-person shooter game developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision. Released on November 3, 2017, for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, it is the fourteenth main installment in the Call of Duty series and the first to be set primarily during World War II since Call of Duty: World at War in 2008. The game's campaign is set in the European theatre, focusing on a squad in the 1st Infantry Division and their battles on the Western Front, particularly during Operation Overlord (D-Day). Players control Ronald 'Red' Daniels, with squadmates providing support such as ammunition, health, and grenades. The game features traditional 'boots on the ground' gameplay, removing advanced movement mechanics from previous titles, and includes a 'hit-the-deck' mechanic for quick cover. The multiplayer mode introduces the Divisions system, replacing the create-a-class system, and a social hub called Headquarters. Critics praised the game's campaign for its moving and well-characterized story, excellent visuals and sound design, and the return to traditional gameplay. Review scores include 9/10 from GameSpot, 8.75/10 from Game Informer, and 8/10 from IGN. The game received 'generally favorable' reviews on Metacritic, with scores of 80/100 for Xbox One, 79/100 for PS4, and 73/100 for PC. It was nominated for several awards, including Best Shooter and Best Multiplayer in IGN's Best of 2017 Awards, and won a Golden Reel Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing. Despite some criticisms for repetitive missions and lack of innovation, Call of Duty: WWII remains a significant title in the series, appreciated for its authentic war story and engaging multiplayer mode.
