Genji: Dawn of the Samurai is an action-adventure game released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2. Loosely based on 'The Tale of the Heike,' the game follows the adventures of Minamoto Yoshitsune as he descends from his mountain retreat to avenge his father by defeating the Taira clan. Along his journey, Yoshitsune meets the Tamayoribito clan, guardians of the Amahagane, stones of power that allow select individuals to release magical powers known as kamui. Players control either Yoshitsune, a fast and agile warrior, or Benkei, a powerful but slower monk, each with unique abilities and combat styles. The gameplay involves third-person combat, similar to the Dynasty Warriors series, with a focus on combos, special attacks, and the use of kamui powers to execute devastating counter-attacks. The game received above-average reviews, with a Metacritic score of 74/100 and positive feedback from critics such as Game Informer (8.5/10) and Edge (8/10). Although it is not as widely known today, Genji: Dawn of the Samurai remains a notable title in the action-adventure genre, particularly for fans of Japanese mythology and historical settings.
