Evolve is a first-person shooter video game developed by Turtle Rock Studios and published by 2K, released in February 2015 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is set on an industrialized alien planet called Shear, where five players engage in an asymmetrical multiplayer structure: four players control hunters, while one player controls a monster. The hunters, played from a first-person perspective, must track and eliminate the monster, while the monster, controlled from a third-person perspective, aims to evolve by consuming wildlife and become powerful enough to either eliminate the hunters or destroy the objective. The game features various classes of hunters, each with unique skills and abilities, such as Assault, Trapper, Support, and Medic, which require coordinated teamwork to succeed. The monster also has different types with varying abilities, making each match dynamic and challenging. Evolve includes several game modes, including Hunt, Nest, Rescue, Defend, and Arena, as well as an Evacuation mode that serves as a five-match multiplayer story mode. Prior to its release, Evolve received positive reception and won several awards, including Best of Show at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014 and Gamescom 2014. Upon release, it garnered positive reviews for its innovative asymmetrical structure, controls, and designs, although it was criticized for its progression system and light narrative. Despite being a commercial success, the game's player base dwindled shortly after release, and the dedicated servers were shut down in September 2018. However, the game remains notable for its unique gameplay mechanics and its contribution to the multiplayer shooter genre. Evolve was praised by critics for its skilful movement and coordinated teamwork, though it was noted for its short-lasting gameplay sessions.
